"The Red Laugh" by Leonid Andreyev is a novel about brutalities of war, its madness. It appeared a decade before the outbreak of the WWI. It impressed me when I was young. And now? Probably it's time of the gold laugh. Before and during COVID, a Tajik man Murat worked for us. Quiet, Allah-fearing, honest. He spoke Russian poorly. He knew how to dig and knead concrete, and take care of the garden. Before he came to us, he'd been cheated out of money several times. He was lame – hurt his knee. And... he had a mouth full of gold teeth. It was a true contrast.
